Your vehicle is the sum of many components that have to work in synchronicity in order for your car to operate. In simple terms, your vehicle's transmission is responsible for transmitting power from the engine to the axles of your car, which control the turning of your wheels.

Transmission Fluid Change Similar to an oil change, a transmission fluid change drains your old transmission fluid and replaces it with new fluid. Transmission fluid lubricates all the components of the transmission, allowing gears to change without a hitch. Many transmission repair jobs are the result of dirty transmission fluid or the lack of transmission fluid, meaning that axles and gears are grinding against each other every time you switch gears, endangering your entire engine. Transmission repair mechanics will perform what is known as a flush and fill, which entails draining all the old transmission fluid, cleaning plugs, replacing filters and adding new fluid.

Gear synchronisers are only featured in manual transmissions, and they regulate the speed of your gears as you shift from one to another, so that one gear doesn't spin at a higher rate than the other, causing friction.

When these synchronisers fail, you will have a very difficult time shifting gears and will hear a grinding sound when you do. Roller bearings are a component of automatic transmissions that prevent your gears from grinding against each other. When these bearings are worn out or damaged, you will experience transmission issues, typified by grinding noises. In manual transmissions, a clutch is the pedal you push as you bring your car to a stop.

You must release your foot from the clutch when you accelerate or it will wear down in a short period of time. A worn or damaged clutch is one of the most common types of transmission problems that mechanics see on a daily basis.
